Client: Waterloo Catholic District School Board

Project Location: Kitchener, Cambridge, and Waterloo, Ontario

The Waterloo Catholic District School Board hired NA Engineering Associates Inc., to complete a roof consulting program that included assessing the existing roof conditions, recommending repair/replacement options, creating tender documents for the roof replacement project(s), and ongoing field reviews during construction. The roof replacement program had to be tendered so that work could be completed May – August, with all work finished before students started arriving on Labour Day Weekend.

Monsignor Doyle Catholic Secondary and Canadian Martyr’s Catholic Elementary Schools both involved the partial roof replacement of flat roofs using mop applied built-up roofing systems. The new roof system included tapered and thermal insulation, tapered insulation provided back up slope around the perimeter of the roof to promote proper drainage on the roof surface. A unique feature of the roof replacements at Monsignor Doyle and Canadian Martyrs included the installation of new daylighting systems, using innovative, sustainable skylight devices. The result provided additional daylight inside the schools hallways and main entrances, while the new roof system provides a reliable roof that should keep the schools free of leaks for many years to come. At St. Agnes Catholic Elementary School, a temporary repair was completed to solve an issue with leaks entering the building at the location of an addition which had been added to the original building. The repair involved removing the existing roof system the entire length around the joint between the two parts of the building and installed a new modified bitumen system, fully torch applied and complete with tapered insulation and roof scuppers to promote proper drainage. The School has not reported any leaks and it is anticipated this repair will be a long term solution to the issue
