At a Glance: Design of new Electric Vehicle charging stations

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) produces almost half of the electricity that Ontario homes, schools, hospitals and businesses reply on each day. A shift towards greener technologies has been and will continue to grow. As the leading providers of electricity for Ontario, OPG will be on the forefront in leading the way to promoting greener technologies. A decrease in vehicle emissions is now prevalent within the organization. OPG intends to install Electric Vehicle, (EV), stations at all their sites.

Transportation emissions in Ontario pose one of the province’s greatest challenges in achieving the government’s GHG emission reduction targets. Through the Electric Vehicle Chargers Ontario (EVCO) grant program, the province is working with 24 public and private sector partners to create a network of electric vehicle stations in cities, along highways and at workplaces and public places across Ontario. Since OPG is the premiere generator of electricity, they illustrated good interest for this technology. With this unprecedented expansion in new charging infrastructure across the province, electric vehicle owners can now plan longer trips with more confidence because charging stations will be more readily available, similar to gas stations.

As such, OPG retained the services of NA Engineering Associates Inc., to prepare a preliminary design of a total of twenty charging stations that can service eighty vehicles simultaneous across five geographic locations throughout the Toronto – Clarington corridor.
